While my work with the AmeriHealth organization spans years, last October, I assumed the role of SVP and president of Diversified Markets, including oversight of AmeriHealth Administrators. As I reflect on my first year working more closely on the AmeriHealth Administrators business, I’m filled with gratitude and pride. Leading an organization with more than three decades of experience partnering with Native American tribal nations is both a privilege and a profound responsibility.
This partnership is not just about administering health plans; it’s about building trust, listening first, and showing up for our partners in ways that honor their sovereignty and respect their values. We know that no two tribes are the same. Each brings its own traditions, priorities, and vision for health and wellness. Our role is to listen, learn, and create solutions that reflect those unique needs.
Strengthening partnerships through cultural understanding and custom solutions
Internally, we strive to deepen our associates’ understanding of tribal history, values, and contemporary issues. By engaging in thoughtful conversations and learning directly from Indigenous voices (e.g., through monthly discussions and listen-and-learn sessions), our team gains valuable cultural insights that translate into more empathetic and effective service for our tribal customers. This ongoing education helps ensure that we honor the unique perspectives of the communities we serve, fostering stronger relationships and more meaningful partnerships.
One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is collaborating with tribal leaders to design health plans that incorporate traditional medicine and culturally appropriate care. Whether it’s covering traditional healing practices, working with local providers, or ensuring seamless care coordination, our goal is to support holistic well-being that aligns with tribal values. We’ve held roundtable discussions with tribal clients to understand what matters most — down to the details of providing custom solutions for traditional ceremonies. These conversations remind us that cultural alignment isn’t a box to check; it’s a continuous journey of partnership and respect.
Helping reduce administrative burdens and improving access to care
Access to care remains a challenge in many rural settings and on tribal reservations. That’s why we work closely with tribes to build provider networks that reflect the local landscape, including Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities, 638 clinics, and community providers. Our team is dedicated to credentialing local practitioners, streamlining referrals, and navigating the complexities of reimbursement and coordination of benefits. We know that reducing administrative burdens allows tribal leaders to focus on what matters most: the health of their people.
Data has become a powerful tool for driving better outcomes. We provide robust, user-friendly dashboards that highlight cost drivers, utilization trends, and health outcomes. But data alone isn’t enough. Our team partners with tribal leaders to interpret these insights and apply them to benefit design, wellness initiatives, and long-term planning. We’re especially proud of our ability to identify Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) program eligibility at the member level, which helps tribes maximize savings and deliver tailored solutions.
Cost transparency is another cornerstone of our approach. We break down where every dollar goes — whether it’s high-cost medications, emergency room visits, or out-of-network claims — and work side by side with tribal leaders to find savings without sacrificing access or quality. Sometimes that means steering members toward high-value providers, expanding telehealth, or optimizing pharmacy benefits. It’s all about aligning the plan with the tribe’s priorities, so members get the care they need, and the tribe achieves financial sustainability.
Embracing innovation and partnership
The third-party administrator landscape has evolved dramatically over the past 15 years. Today, tribes need data insights, clinical support, and culturally aligned services. Looking ahead, I see even greater opportunities for real-time analytics, AI-driven care coordination, and digital tools that empower members. The future is about integration, personalization, and accountability.
I’m reminded that our greatest strength lies in partnership. The wisdom, resilience, and vision of tribal nations inspire us every day. At AmeriHealth Administrators, we are committed to listening, learning, and working alongside our tribal partners on the road to better health.
